NHS commission for 13 internal artworks for Lochfield Primary Care Centre, Dumfries, The works were designed to promote a more restful environment.  Ideas for the artworks came from the historical use of the site which was next to a loch. Macro photographic images of wild flowers and grasses from the borders of local loch’s were printed and hand painted over. The resulting images were then scanned to produce the final results. Some works combined macro images with archival maps of the site.

The artworks for the Alcohol & Drugs Support counselling rooms and the Health Improvement Service waiting room were created in collaboration with with service users. Jo ran a series of creative workshops that introduced participants to macrophotography techniques and participants created composite images by hand painting over the images. Participants engaged well with the creative process and attended the opening of the Health Centre as key guests.

Jo Hodges

Jo Hodges is a multidisciplinary public artist based in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
with a background in Human Ecology, community development and social justice.

Her work investigates ecological and socio-cultural systems, processes and relationships, and explores new strategies for working in public. Her practice takes many forms; temporary and permanent works, site specific installations and socially engaged projects and processes. She is often led by context, where the outcome is determined as a result of process.

She is interested in research, experimentation and collaboration at the intersection of environment, culture and technology and exploring the role of art in social change. She is joint Director-Curator of Sanctuary Lab, a public art laboratory in the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park.
